Speaker Spotlight: Joshua Freeman

Growers seeking the latest information and research to help them succeed need look no further than the 2019 Florida Ag Expo seminar program. Two concurrent educational programs will take place. One of the sessions will focus on soil fumigation. Growers will hear from Joshua Freeman, a horticultural specialist at the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences North Florida Research and Education Center.

Joshua Freeman

Freeman will discuss two new fumigants under evaluation in Florida. Ethanedinitrile and sulfuryl fluoride have been in the works for several years. Although neither are registered yet, they have very high potential and have proven to have as good or better efficacy than standard fumigants.

“Right now, we are looking at use patterns, how to put them out and dose rates,” Freeman says. “They have killable properties that are more similar to methyl bromide than our available fumigants, which is why we are interested in them. They have the potential to move throughout the soil and cover some of the deficiencies that our available fumigants have.”

To learn more, growers can attend Freeman’s presentation at 1:50 p.m. on Nov. 21 at the Florida Ag Expo.

Florida Ag Expo will take place on Nov. 21 at the GCREC in Wimauma. Growers will not want to miss this event, so don’t wait. To preregister, click here or call 352-671-1909. All preregistered growers will automatically be entered for a chance to win a John Deere gun safe donated by Everglades Equipment Group.
